Reasons Your Internet Service Seems Slow

When you try to access your internet service, you expect that it will be fast enough to handle all of the work that you have to do or all of the games that you want to play. Sometimes, your internet might not be as fast as you would like but will typically come back to prior speeds in a short time. If you notice your speeds dwindling, there are a few reasons to look into.

  • Wiring
  • Traffic
  • Router
  • Plans
  • Resetting
  • The Landscape

Wiring

One of the first things that you can check is the wiring. A wire could have become jostled and loosened, creating a slower speed for your internet. If your wires are older, then you want to make sure they aren’t frayed. You should try to update the wiring for your modem and other components once a year so that there is a strong connection.

Traffic

When several people are using the home internet at one time, then it could create a lag in the service. Try to use the internet when others in your home aren’t online. If multiple people do need to use the service or if you know that someone will be playing a game or performing research with multiple tabs open, then consider going to a library or another location to use the internet. You can also use the internet service on your phone instead of using the one in your home.

Router

You want to invest in the best equipment possible when it comes to your internet service. This starts with your router. If you don’t spend a lot on a router, then you might have issues because of the components inside the equipment and the connections that are offered. These are fine for basic functions, but if you plan to play games online or if multiple people will use the internet at once for school, work, or pleasure, then you want to consider spending a little more on a better router so that you don’t have slow service.

Plans

When you signed up with an internet company, you likely selected a plan that you thought would work for your household. If things have changed and you need a higher speed, then consider changing the plan that you have. Keep in mind that some companies will begin to lower internet speeds overtime to try to get you to upgrade your plan and pay more money. If you have satellite internet, then you can expect slower speeds after you’ve reached your monthly limit, which is a reason why you want to look into plans that offer a cable or fiber-optic connection.

Resetting

Sometimes, all you have to do is reset your equipment. The modem and router might need to be powered off for a few minutes so that the circuits and connections can get back online and in sync with each other. Check all of the devices in your home before resetting your equipment. An issue with only one device usually means that the problem is specific to that item instead of the internet connection itself.

The Landscape

Your location could play a role in your internet service provider speed. If there are a lot of trees near your home, then you might notice slower speeds. You could also see slow speeds if it’s raining hard outside, if there’s a storm, or if it’s snowing.
